Vote for The Republic in the 2015 Fringe Audience Choice Awards

As we approach our second weekend of performances at the Orlando Fringe Festival, voting has begun for fan favorites at the event – and we’re hoping you vote for The Republic!

You can vote for us in the Best Local Show and Best Show in the BYOV categories. And we certainly wouldn’t mind write-ins for Best Director (our Dungeon Master, Sarah Elger!) Best Male & Female Performers, Best Sets, Best Costumes, and Best of the Fest – but that’s entirely up to you. In fact, it all is.

We just hope that if you enjoyed our experience, you’ll give us a nod. We’re certainly voting for our favorite shows in all other categories! Thanks so much.

The Republic ‘Alpha Test’ a smashing success, welcoming players inside for the first time

Things have been just a little hectic around The Republic lately, hence the lack of blog posts recently. Since my last update, we’ve been building seven days a week, preparing one incredible experience for you to enjoy beginning next week.

Last night, we welcomed 30 very excited players into our world. It was our “alpha test,” a chance for us to run the full show start to finish with outsiders for the very first time.

Before the performance, The Republic creator Sarah Elger met our eager players outside for a few words, noting the “test” nature of the evening. We naturally didn’t want to reveal everything just yet, still hard at work completing our sets, sound, lighting, effects, costumes, and makeup.

Waiting inside was our incredible cast of performers, ready to interact in character for the duration of the experience.

As players trickled inside, receiving their individual roles for the night, anticipation was building.

entry

Once let loose into our 18,000 square foot performance space, our first players had an absolute blast throughout the 90-minute experience. From the moment we welcomed them inside for an introduction to the show to the final seconds of the grand finale, each player was thoroughly entranced with the story and performances, literally running around at times, fully embodying the roles they had been given as scenes unfolded around them.

All the while, Sarah watched from her Dungeon Master control center high above the performance space. Even without all surveillance cameras set up just yet, she was aware every action that took place, guiding the show to its conclusion.

And when it had ended, our first players raved about how much fun they had – and how they were instantly ready to return when our full performances soon begin.

Then, just as quickly as it had all started, all was quiet inside, leaving Sarah – along with her entire cast and crew – smiling proudly as her creation had come to life for the very first time with wonderful success.

Team building through terror at Legends – A Haunting at Old Town

This week, The Republic creator Sarah Elger had a wonderfully horrible idea.

In lieu of regular rehearsal, our performers were instructed by Phil and Allie to meet in a seemingly random parking lot in Kissimmee. They were told to not ask questions and not speak upon arrival. From there, they were led into a nearby empty field, bound, blindfolded, and berated.

After some exercises intended to help them get to know each other and each other’s characters even better, the blindfolds and zip ties were removed and they were escorted across the street, still in silence.

They were led to Legends – A Haunting at Old Town, a year-round haunted house we rented out for the evening, unbeknownst to them. Inside, The Republic creator Sarah Elger and I waited under the pretense that we had gone missing. It was their job to find us…

The Legends team did a fantastic job with our makeup, making Sarah look like she’d been beaten and bruised as my kidnapping victim, after I’d transformed into one of their “twitchlings.” There were three separate areas in the haunt at which Sarah and I interacted with our performers. As she screamed out for help, only a small number came to her rescue while the rest ran by scared.

We all gathered afterward at a nearby Old Town bar for some drinks, a bit of karaoke, and plenty of socializing. And yes, Sarah and I stayed in our makeup throughout the rest of the night.

The team building evening was a success and everyone had a blast.

Dances and kidnappings filled our festive fundraising party

It’s a big week for The Republic. We met our Kickstarter goal (thank you again!) and are heading into a weekend filled with building as many walls as we can to continue to transform our performance space from an empty warehouse into 18,000 square feet of fully themed environments.

As we ready ourselves for another weekend of excitement, we are looking back at last weekend’s fun-filled fundraising party, which offered the world a first look at several of our characters. Those who were there had a blast interacting with our performers. Though they weren’t in costume, they were most definitely in character the entire time.

For those who couldn’t make it out, today I offer you a glimpse at a few highlights from the party, including a particularly passionate and manic tango performed by Jana Bernard and Steven Kabick, as the Medusa and Minotaur, as well as a kidnapping at the party featuring our CEO (played by Kathryn Fabbroni), Oracle (played by Chris Brown), and Silver (played by Michael Corinella):

Now, the exact moments featured during the party will not be part of our production, but do give a sense of the type of interactions that players will enjoy while experiencing The Republic.

Other performers seen in the video and photos above include Steven Finkle as Daedalus, Emmi Green as a Bronze, Kim Lopez as a Slave, Jim Inzirillo and Clare Ghezzi as Surgeon, Justin Jones as HR Boss #1, and Gus Rodriguez as HR Boss #2. We announced these characters during the party, though have withheld details about who they are really are – on purpose. You’ll have to come out to experience The Republic beginning in May to meet them yourself.

Though… we are planning a few more surprise appearances between now and then.

Over the next couple days, our engineer Phil Burgos will be leading a team to make that happen. Check out all these 2×4’s he and The Republic creator Sarah Elger loaded up today:

The Republic to be featured in Halloween Extreme Tour with special behind-the-scenes experience

Today we are pleased to announce that The Republic will be one of four Orlando attractions offering special entertainment for Halloween Extreme attendees.

Halloween Extreme is a convention coming to Orlando, May 15-17, giving the public access to movie and theme park quality props and effects for home haunters and Halloween enthusiasts alike. Over two nights, Halloween Extreme will offer several unique experiences exclusive to the event by way of tours leaving the convention halls and venturing out into the darkness.

On Saturday, May 16, the Halloween Extreme Tour will bring guests to The Republic for a version of our show customized for the haunt audience, followed by a lights-on, behind-the-scenes look at how our immersive theater experience is brought to life each night.

Tour attendees that same evening will also visit our friends at Legends – A Haunting at Old Town, Central Florida’s premiere year-round haunted house.

We’re extremely excited to showcase The Republic to haunt fans visiting Orlando for Halloween Extreme. Though our interactive theatrical experience is not a haunted house, it is intense and includes elements that will no doubt appeal to fans of haunted attractions.

The evening before, May 15, the Halloween Extreme Tour will take guests to The Shallow Grave for a full show and lights-on tour as well as offering tours of 2 haunted houses at Busch Gardens Howl-O-Scream.

Tickets will be available for the tours beginning next week, including combo passes for both nights, at HalloweenExtreme.com. We look forward to seeing you in May!

Kickstarter party fun as our goal sits within our sights

This past weekend, we introduced Orlando to The Republic – or at least a small sampling of the society we’re creating.

Saturday night, we held a mysterious and intimate party inside our performance space. Amidst sets still very much under construction, our Kickstarter backers had a chance to interact with our performers in character for the very first time. We served themed drinks while the design team mingled with our future players, also offering a variety of live entertainment aimed at showcasing our performers’ many talents.

It was a tremendous success, both as a special event and as a fundraiser, getting us quite close to our Kickstarter goal. We’re currently just 14% away from our goal, with just over $1,000 to go!

At the end of the night, we took a group photo with our cast, crew, design team, and the last few remaining guests who stayed for the entire duration of the party:

We’ll be sharing much more from the party this week, including a closer look at who our characters are along with video of some of the live performances that took place at the event. Thanks to everyone who showed up!

In the meantime, help us reach our Kickstarter goal! We have just over 1 day remaining, so make your contribution now to nab one of our many exclusive rewards.

The Republic in the news – On TV and on the web

This has been a big news week for us as The Republic has been covered by several major news outlets.

Just a couple hours ago, creator Sarah Elger was interviewed live on WESH 2 NBC’s Orlando My Way morning show to discuss our immersive theater experience:

Earlier in the week, two big theater web sites published excellent articles about The Republic:

  • Broadway World – Mysterious THE REPUBLIC Could Change How Florida Thinks About Theatre
  • Playbill – Theatre and Gaming Worlds Merge in New Immersive Show, Republic
