More money means more madness

A couple weeks ago, our Indiegogo campaign ended successfully, raising more than $3,000 to get The Republic going. We didn’t publicize it much, so we thank our friends and family for chipping in to help cover our startup expenses.

But that’s not nearly enough to entirely fund this particularly unique production. While our team is talented at striking amazing deals, there are some minimums to be met. And that’s where you will soon come in.

This weekend, we’ll be launching a Kickstarter campaign aimed at not only raising a good chunk of the money we’ll need to make the madness of The Republic a reality, but also to offer some incredible rewards for those who join our experience early.

We’ve cooked up some crazy ideas for takeaways and experiences that you’ll only be able to get by backing our project. But you’ll have to come back on Sunday to find out exactly what those ideas are.

With our Kickstarter campaign, you’ll find new behind-the-scenes video and images of what we’ve accomplished so far with our extremely limited budget as well as a glimpse into the plans we dream to achieve should we get fully funded. And we already have some excellent stretch goals in mind too, so we hope to blow well past our goal.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Developing character through costumes

They say clothes make the man. In The Republic, costumes will serve many important purposes well beyond making our performers look good. (Or bad, depending on their social status in our whacked-out fictional society…)

Last night we met with one of our performers, Kim Lopez, along with three of her friends – one via Skype. They’re all fantastic cosplayers who regularly fabricate elaborate outfits with limited budget and time. And that’s exactly what The Republic needs.

Our hour-long discussion broke down the basics of how each performer’s costume will enhance their role and, more importantly, their presence in the world we are creating. Expect each and every one of them to stand out.

Kim and her talented team will be creating costume designs for our performers – and also a few surprises for our players. What that means exactly… well, you’ll just have to come out to see The Republic in person to find out when the show opens in May.

In the meantime, look for some early costume designs to pop up on this blog very soon.

Role Revolution – Moving from auditions to rehearsals

Much has happened since our last update here. We’ve moved past auditions into regular rehearsals, working with our performers to fine tune their most unique of roles.

Over the last few days, we’ve begun rehearsing our first scene, an important moment to set the stage for the rest of the wild performance you will experience – and interact with. I can’t entirely share just what is going on in the photos below. An orientation, of sorts. One you’ll want to be a part of.

The Republic’s creator / Dungeon Master Sarah Elger (seen below in the pink and black dress) is there every step of the way, ensuring each rehearsal improves upon the last while always accepting input and ideas from the entire team of designers and performers. It’s a beautifully creative process.

And it should be obvious from all the smiles that we’re having a ton of fun along the way.

The Republic has twelve specific roles for our performers to portray. But we have far more incredible performers than there are roles, so we’re doubling – sometimes tripling – up, allowing each to interpret their characters to fit their own quirky personalities. While they will all guide players (that’s you) through the same wonderfully intricate story, the way it will actually play out will be different depending on which cast is performing that night.

That just means when we debut in May, you’ll have to come back to fully appreciate the grand scale of The Republic. Again and again. It’ll be different every time, we assure you.

And this post marks the beginning of regular Production Blog updates – almost daily. So keep checking back frequently to watch The Republic come together and to be ready for when tickets go on sale in a few weeks.

Performer Auditions v.2 – Unscripted, Improvised, and Hands-on

This week, we held our second round of performer auditions for The Republic as we begin to narrow down our core cast.

Since The Republic is an entirely unique experience, we have ensured our auditions have been entirely unique as well. Armed with only brief character descriptions, our potential performers were asked to improvise and act out a few roles, making up the scenes and dialogue as they went. They rotated rooms, linked up with others thrown into the same fire, and ultimately created on-the-fly experiences based on who they believed their characters were.

The results were spectacular. This talented group will no doubt put on an incredible show when The Republic debuts in Orlando in May 2015.

Take a look at the emotion and creativity that flowed through our performers in the video below:

Warehouse planning, measuring, preparing

The Republic has secured a fantastic location, centrally located in Orlando. That location will be disclosed to our players as needed when we open in May.

Though we’re not ready to move into the space for another couple months, we recently visited the space to take measurements to properly develop our floor plans and space design.

Inside, the player will experience a “maze” of rooms, large and small, encountering performers and interacting with props and puzzles throughout. Much more to come on that.

That’s me (Ricky Brigante), Phillip Burgos, Sarah Elger, and Nathanael White. You’ll get to know us better – along with the rest of our team – in the months ahead. While we all have our individual roles in The Republic, it’s truly a collaborative effort.

Performer Auditions v.1

Just as The Republic will thrust players into an unexpected new experience, auditions for The Republic put potential performers into a surprising adventure to test their abilities.

Across a recent weekend in downtown Orlando, we welcomed many talented performers to get a taste of what The Republic stands for. The video below shows a sampling of what our performers went through to begin the process. It does not reflect any sort of events that will be part of the actual experience of The Republic, but does give a sense of how the unexpected will always occur.

Our hopeful performers were told where and when to show up, but nothing else. Most responded beautifully:

More audition excitement to come…

What is The Republic?

The Republic is a difficult experience to summarize succinctly.

It’s not a stage show.  It’s not a haunted house.  It’s not an escape room.  It’s not a ride.  It’s something entirely new.

Creator / Dungeon Master Sarah Elger explains in the video below:

Welcome to The Republic Production Blog

The Republic is an innovative, immersive theater experience opening May 2015 in Orlando, Florida.

Combining elements of theater and gaming in a fully themed environment, players step into a themed world inhabited by intriguing characters and take on an important role in this conflicted society. Your decisions dictate how the rich story ends.

As our team creates this unique experience in the coming months, this blog will serve to document and share our progress, from design to construction to completion.

We hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look as The Republic takes shape.
